Plug Wiring - 1970s artwork
|
A piece from the 1970s, artist unknown, presumably destined for a DIY manual. Paint (gouache?) on thick art board measuring approximately 30 x 42 cm. There could hardly be a more prosaic subject matter for a painting than wiring a plug and yet, intentionally or not, the objects here take on a life of their own, like strangely entangled creatures. The primary colours of the wires also give the painting a more dated feel - perhaps recalling Mondrian's restricted palette.
A slightly less dynamic painting from later in the sequence heralds the arrival of the screwdriver gang:

The screwdriver in the foreground puts an end to the blue wire's fun and games while the yellow and red wires passively await their own fate.
