Accidental Dada

The pieces in this section are preparatory shapes and words used for the creation of puzzles in puzzle books and newspapers in the 1970s. Some are hand drawn/written whilst others look like they use Letraset or are printed. These pieces are on thick art board - the largest of which  ('Board 1') measures approx 43 x 28 cm.

Board 1

Board 1, with several sets of abstract (and not so abstract) shapes - each with the appended request to 'List them below' - is pleasantly baffling. Does the missing question ask for similarities, differences, pairs, reversals? It also has a kind of Soviet sci-fi feel to it.

Board 2

Board 3

Boards 2 and 3 have the same content as each other, one with black font on white background, the other with white font on black background. As is suggested by the pencilled request at the top of board 4 it seems that board 3 is the original hand made assemblage whilst board 2 is a reverse print of it. A seemingly Dadaist collection of words. 'Over cast, over dose, over hang' sounds a little ominous, as does 'Love less, spot less, home less' running along the edge.

Board 4

Board 4 has more of the same with further suggestive conjunctions of words including 'sober tales' and 'dream wolves'.
Board 5

Board 6

Boards 5 and 6 are both hand-written, with board 5 being a collection of different instructions for various puzzles (perhaps one applies to  board 1) and board 6 being concerned with crossword puzzles only,

Board 7

Finally, Board 7 is a random assortment of characters and semi-representational shapes. These are not hand-drawn and their source is unknown. Line 4 looks like it might be based on South American masks.
